About this service

About Lipoma Removal

Lipomas are common, benign growths made up of fatty tissue that can appear anywhere on the body. These lumps are typically soft, movable, and painless, but they can vary in size and may cause concern due to their location, size, or visual impact. It's important to monitor any changes in your lipomas, as growth or discomfort could indicate a need for medical attention.

We are dedicated to the safe and precise removal of lipomas, tailoring the procedure to your individual needs — careful removal while aiming for the best possible aesthetic result. During your consultation, we will identify the most effective method for removing your lipoma, prioritising both your safety and your satisfaction with the cosmetic outcome.

What to Expect

Most lipoma removals are straightforward day procedures.

01
Anaesthetic: Local The area is numbed — the procedure should be painless.
02
Duration: 15–45 Minutes Depending on the size, location, and removal method.
03
Recovery: 0–1 Week Most return to normal daily activities within 24–48 hours.

The procedure. Local anaesthetic is injected around the site. A small incision is made over the lipoma and the entire capsule is carefully removed — complete removal makes recurrence unlikely. The wound is closed with sutures and a dressing applied. In suitable cases, liposuction may be used instead.

Healing & risks

Recovery, Risks & Scarring

Recovery is typically quick. Most patients return to normal daily activities within 24–48 hours, though you may be advised to avoid strenuous activity for a few days. Mild soreness or bruising afterwards is normal and usually settles within a few days.

As with any minor surgery, there are small risks of bleeding, infection, or scarring — all risks are explained clearly during your consultation. If the entire lipoma capsule is removed, recurrence is unlikely; incomplete removal increases the chance of regrowth, which is why consultant-led treatment is important.

See our patient information page for full aftercare guidance, and the BAPRAS patient guide to benign skin conditions.

Treatment methods

Lipoma Treatment Options

The most appropriate approach depends on the lipoma's size, depth, and location. Your exact price is always confirmed before treatment begins.

Surgical excision. The most common method, involving a small incision over the lipoma to remove it. Effective for larger lipomas and typically leaves a small scar.

Liposuction. A less invasive option for softer lipomas, using a thin tube to suction out the fatty tissue. This method results in a smaller scar but is suitable only for specific lipomas and may have a higher risk of recurrence.

Lipoma Removal FAQs

Lipoma removal FAQ

01 What is a lipoma and is it harmful?

A lipoma is a soft, fatty lump that forms beneath the skin and is usually harmless. It grows slowly, is typically painless, and is considered benign. However, if it becomes large, uncomfortable, or unsightly, removal may be considered.

02 How quickly can I get a lipoma removed in Edinburgh?

We usually offer appointments within a few days at our private clinic in North Edinburgh. Many patients from across Scotland choose to travel to us for prompt assessment and consultant-led lipoma removal with minimal delay.

03 When should I consider having a lipoma removed?

You might consider removal if the lipoma is growing, painful, causing discomfort, or affecting your appearance. Many patients also choose removal for peace of mind.

04 What are the different methods of lipoma removal?

The most common method is surgical excision, performed under local anaesthetic. In some cases, liposuction may be used for larger lipomas, depending on suitability.

05 Will my lipoma come back after it's removed?

If the entire lipoma capsule is removed, recurrence is unlikely. Incomplete removal increases the chance of regrowth, which is why consultant-led treatment is important.

06 How much does private lipoma removal cost in Edinburgh?

The consultation fee is £125. Lipoma removal starts from £695, depending on the size and number of lipomas. A personalised quote is provided after your consultation.

07 Is lipoma removal painful?

No. The area is numbed with local anaesthetic during the procedure. Mild soreness or bruising afterwards is normal and usually settles within a few days.

08 How long does lipoma removal take?

Most procedures take around 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the size and location of the lipoma. You can usually go home the same day.

09 What is the recovery time after lipoma surgery?

Recovery is typically quick. Most patients return to normal daily activities within 24–48 hours, though you may be advised to avoid strenuous activity for a few days.

10 Are there any risks involved with lipoma removal?

As with any minor surgery, there are small risks of bleeding, infection, or scarring. We explain all risks clearly during your consultation and provide aftercare advice.

11 Is lipoma removal available on the NHS in Scotland?

Yes, but in many areas, lipoma removal is only offered on the NHS if the lump causes significant symptoms. Some patients choose private treatment for quicker access.

12 Do I need a referral to book a private lipoma removal consultation?

No referral is required. You can contact us directly to arrange a consultation with a consultant surgeon.
